EcoSan is short for "Ecological Sanitation".

EcoSan Ghana is a non-profit NGO that aims at providing ecological toilets and clean water to rural Ghana, particularly in Atiwa, Fanteakwa, and Upper Denkyira East.

According to Unicef, worldwide every day about 1800 children (under the age of 5) die as the result of contaminated water and unhygienic sanitation. “If 90 school buses filled with kindergartners were to crash every day, with no survivors, the world would take notice. But this is precisely what happens every single day because of poor water, sanitation and hygiene.”

According to water.org, in Ghana only 13% of people have access to improved sanitation. Dependency on unsafe water sources is higher in rural areas. In Ghana, 25% of all deaths in children under the age of 5 are attributed to diarrhea. In Ghana, 3 million people lack access to safe water, and 23 million people lack access to improved sanitation.

Currently EcoSan Ghana is working on building a dry-composting toilet in Tekyekrom, and has succesfully drilled for water in Modaso, using a manpower-driven percussion drill tower. Both projects are locally managed by Nicholas Ofori-Atta. Future projects are planned in Tekyekrom, Adasewase, Obompe, Nsutem, Anyinam, Anyinam-Ankaase and Bunso.
